There has always been some form of mental health liaison service within acute hospitals. The Rapid, Assessment, Interface and Discharge service is a model which began in City Hospital, Birmingham in 2009. It provides a more comprehensive service by operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and offers a comprehensive range of mental health specialities. Rapid, Assessment, Interface and Dischargeworks as a specialist multidisciplinary mental health service, within acute hospitals, aimed at people aged over 16. The Rapid, Assessment, Interface and Discharge model states that every referral in A&E should be seen within one hour and all other referrals seen within 24 hours, with appropriate and timely review. Following rigorous review, it was found to generate significant cost savings which subsequently led to Rapid, Assessment, Interface and Discharge services being set up throughout the country (See Publications). There are currently approximately 25 organisations in England who state that they deliver Rapid, Assessment, Interface and Dischargeservices.
